Leaf Visual Style for Windows 7

Oh beautiful nature! Another great custom Aero theme that will modify not only your caption buttons and forward/back buttons. The theme includes 6 different "sub” themes, which is quite amazing. Also, I very much like the thin borders. According to the author, window frames and scrollbars are both thinner.

Metalik Glass for Windows 7

Another very hot Aero desktop theme! If you don’t like the hover effects of the default Windows 7 caption buttons and you want a bluish glow when you hover over the caption buttons (close/minimize/maximize) then this be the perfect theme for you. It also modifies all of the Windows icons if you install the theme correctly.

Static 2.0

Static 2.0 is definitely one of the most beautiful Windows 7 themes I used lately. I like the idea of the colorful taskbar icons, the colorful shell, the colorful Windows search. Color can be used so effectively and this theme makes use of it! I really hope that we something like this in Windows 8. The Metro UI is using a lot of colors as well, so if Windows 8 themes come close to this I will be very happy – else we have to create some more custom Windows 8 themes

How to install Windows 7 shell themes

Installing Windows 7 Shell Themes

Update 8/7/2010: We have released a Windows 7 theme installer that allows you to install Windows 7 shell themes quite easily. If you are annoyed by installing Windows 7 themes manually, you can check out the Windows 7 theme installerhere.

Theme Patcher (Required)

Before you start thinking about installing Windows 7 shell themes, you have to make sure that your Windows 7 is capable of installing 3rd-party themes. By default, Windows 7 does not allow 3rd-party themes!

Download Universal Theme Patcher.

This patcher will automatically patch the following files on Windows 7: uxtheme.dll, themeui.dll, themeservice.dll that allow you to install shell themes.

General Info: Windows 7 SysWOW64 Folder

Windows 7 themes often include system files for Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit. If you are on Windows 7 64-bit you will often need both! Because Windows 7 64-bit can emulate 32-bit you will need 32-bit files as well or how do you thought was it possible to run 32-bit software on Windows 7 64-bit?

Important: SysWOW64 is the 32-bit folder of Windows 7 64-bit. All 32-bit files have to be copied here, but only if the theme actually requires it (not all of them require it).

Majestic Metal

A theme with some VERY large borders. If you want large borders in Windows 7, this is for you. Clearly, not one of my favorites, but not everyone likes thin borders, so I’m including this one as well. Maybe not one of the best dark themes, but that obviously depends on YOUR taste.
