Where are all the programs? Here’s how to find programs in Windows 8

If you are having problems finding all your programs, read this tutorial to learn how to find all of your Windows 8 apps, programs, tools

Microsoft Windows 8 comes with the streamlined, touch-friendly Metro User Interface. Metro UI replaces Windows start button and menu with a grid of tiles. If you are new in Windows 8, you must have seen that the installed programs are not appearing in the start menu, which was there till Windows 7. The Metro UI tiles launch software.

If you want to find out the shortcuts of the installed programs to access them, then read the instructions below.

Finding Programs (UI: Developer Preview Very Similar To Consumer Preview)

1. First switch to Metro user interface by pressing Windows button.

Metro UI

2. See the bottom right corner of Metro user Interface .You will see a Rightward Arrow icon there. Click on that icon quite a few times till your program icon appears on the screen.

Click On Arrow

3. If you want to open the program normally, then just left click on that icon.

Click On icon

But if you want to open the program with Administrative privilege, then Right click on it. Now click on Advanced and select Run as Administrator.

Run Program As Administrator

Now the program will be opened with administrative privilege.

View Full Version : Can't change folder icons back to default...
raechelliMar 28, 2011, 10:38 AMI changed the folder icons for my Applications and Downloads folder, but now I want to change them back to default. I tried clicking "Get Info," highlighting the icon, and deleting. I also tried pressing "command+x"/cutting. Neither worked.
Does anyone know how I can fix this?
Or, where I can find the default icons so I can change them back? Tried searching everywhere for an answer to both, but couldn't find a solution.
Thanks.
ECUpirate44Mar 28, 2011, 10:39 AMGo to get info, then click on the folder icon on top, then click delete.

I tried clicking "Get Info," highlighting the icon, and deleting.
Where are the icons located that you're trying to change? On the Dock? Desktop? Finder sidebar? Or in Finder?

Create new folder, copy the default icon, paste the icon in the same way you got the custom icon.
GGJstudiosMar 30, 2011, 12:23 PMCreate new folder, copy the default icon, paste the icon in the same way you got the custom icon.
That's one way to do it, but if a custom icon was already added, you should be able to revert to the default icon by simply deleting the custom icon, as ECUpirate44 posted. raechelli, I'd try that again, making sure that after you click on the custom icon, it has the blue "halo" around it before you press the delete key.
raechelliApr 3, 2011, 02:46 PMI don't have a copy of the default icon. Where can I get it?
I tried highlighting it and deleting it. Nothing happens.
Thanks for your help, everyone.
Gregg2Apr 3, 2011, 05:23 PMYou shouldn't need a copy of the default icon. It defaults to the default. Delete the custom one.
raechelliJul 3, 2011, 12:47 AMI tried deleting the custom Applications icon, but the Applications folder icon didn't revert back to the default folder icon. It's still the same.
When you change icons, does the new/custom icon get saved somewhere else?
Gregg2Jul 3, 2011, 08:19 AMYou "tried" to delete it. How?
Get Info, highlight icon in that window, hit the delete key on your keyboard.
(Sorry if you already knew that, just read the last post this time.)

I did that. Get Info, clicked on icon so the blue halo was around it, pressed delete. When I pressed delete there was an 'error sound.'
I also tried deleting the original .icns file of the custom icon, hoping that the folder icon would revert to the default icon. Didn't help.
mccadJul 3, 2011, 08:33 PMCheck if your account has "read and write" privileges at the bottom of the get info window.
If it says read only you cant delete the icon.
Change it read and write and it should be sweet.

My account says I can read $ write :/ Not sure why it's not allowing me to make changes...
mccadJul 6, 2011, 12:18 AMTry unlocking the padlock at bottom of get info window.
Make changes and then re lock it.

ahh I tried it. Clicked padlock, typed in my password, padlock was unlocked, clicked icon, blue halo appeared, pressed "delete," and the error sound came again.
